Maya is intelligent and is moved up two semesters when she arrives at her school in San Francisco. The first school she attends is filled with troubled girls and Maya has trouble concentrating on school. She transfers to George Washington High School. This is a white school located about sixty blocks from home. Angelou refers to this as the first real school she ever attended. To get to school, she takes the street car through the white neighborhood. She is uncomfortable leaving the familiarity of her neighborhood and traveling through a white neighborhood full of rich kids.
