Chapter 20 Summary

The Summer Fish Fry is the biggest get together each year for the black people in Stamps. Members of all the local churches attend the fish fry and the women bake. Men fish for bass and women clean, scale and fry the fish. The younger children play games. Maya attempts to bring a book, but Momma tells her she can either play or work. Maya wanders into a clearing after finding a place in the woods to urinate. There she meets Louise Kendricks, who becomes her first girl friend. Louise lives with her mother, she is a lonely girl and Maya thinks she resembles Bailey. The girls spin and play a game called falling in the sky. They begin speaking a made up language called Tut, which is much more difficult to understand.....
