Chapter 19 Summary

People gather in the store to listen to a fight between Carnera and Louis. The children hope for a bloody victory because the adults will celebrate with candy and soda for the kids. When Louis begins to go down, it feels to the audience like another whipping or lynching. A loss will make them feel as if they are back in slavery. The Brown Bomber makes a comeback and wins the fight. Louis is still the champion. After the fight, Momma has those who live a distance away stay for the night. It is considered far too dangerous for a black man to be out after the fight. They are afraid to be out alone at night after the victory for fear of repercussions from white men.
