Chapter 9 Summary

It is about a year later that Bailey Johnson Senior comes to Stamps to collect the children. Maya thinks Daddy isn't at all like she has imagined, she is impressed by the perfect English that he speaks. She feels nervous whenever he watches her during his three week visit. He tells the children he is taking them to California. Maya thinks about pleading to stay with Momma, but she doesn't know if she can live without Bailey. As an adult, Maya asks Momma if she loves her, but Momma simply tells her that God loves you and to be a good girl and then he will love you.

On the way to California, their father tells the children he is taking them to see their mother in St. Louis. Maya is frightened and begs.....
