Chapter 7 Summary

Momma has been married three times: to Mr. Johnson, Mr. Henderson and Mr. Murphy. The kids meet Mr. Murphy once in the years they live with their grandmother. He comes one Saturday and spends the night on the floor. He waits until they come home from church on Sunday before he leaves. Willie stays home from church that day to make sure Murphy doesn't steal anything. Murphy leaves after dinner and they don't see him again.

Momma's love life is a mystery to Maya and she can't get answers to her questions. Momma doesn't answer questions on any subject other than religion. Momma used to be pretty, but Maya admires her strength and power. Momma plans to teach children to live the ways she has found to be safe. This includes never trusting white.....
