Chapter 6 Summary

Reverend Howard Thomas, a presiding elder in their church comes for a visit. He visits every three months and stays at Momma's the Saturday before presiding over Sunday church services. Bailey and Maya hate him because he never remembers their names and always eats the best pieces of chicken. After dinner, the children are sent to their room to study. Bailey sneaks back into the Store to hear the adults' gossip. The children are sure the adults are talking of nothing but adults doing "it" and about white people.

On these Sundays, Momma cooks a big breakfast, but it gets cold while the Reverend says long prayers. The children sit in the front row of the church. They aren't allowed to sit in the children's section. The Sunday when Reverend Thomas visits Sister Monroe,.....
