Tootsie is the story of Michael Dorsey and his transformation to becoming a woman. Michael can't get a job as an actor because he is so hard to work for, so he decides to pretend to be a woman to get a part on a soap opera. Michael wins the part, and for months, he plays the role not only of the character in the show but also of Dorothy Michaels, the actress. Eventually, he falls in love with his colleague, Julie Nichols and risks his whole career by revealing himself on a live show, so he can win her love.
