Style and Cinematography
The Straight Story is based on the true story of Alvin Straight, who traveled from Iowa to Wisconsin to see his brother. Lyle has had a bad stroke, and Alvin wants to make amends since they haven't talked for years. Alvin can't drive, so he rides his lawnmower for six weeks to get there.
Alvin Straight is an inspiration to viewers. His tenacity and stubbornness keep him from giving up even when everyone thinks he's insane. After fighting in World War II and raising a family, Alvin still has enough energy to undertake a major journey. Instead of being frightened by sleeping outside alone at night, he feels that after all he's been through, he has nothing left to fear in this life.
David Lynch does a beautiful job directing this film. He takes a major risk by keeping the action moving slowly throughout the film. Many viewers demand films...
