The Maltese Falcon was originally created by the Knights Templar for the Spanish King. They created the bird and encrusted it with precious jewels. Over the years, it was stolen numerous times, and eventually, it was painted black to camouflage it. Gutman has been searching for the bird for years and believes that he has finally found it as this film begins.

The Maltese Falcon represents the dangerous world of materialism and greed. Many men have died over the years trying to either obtain or keep the falcon. Gutman is just one of the many, and now he believes that he has finally found the falcon. He is willing to do anything to hang onto it.
