Johnny wears a clown mask when he steals the money from the racetrack. In a way, this mask symbolizes the truth that the entire plan and the job of being a thief is foolish and pointless. As Johnny walks into the back room in the clown mask, he holds the men up at gunpoint. They look at him as if he's crazy at first, and then they realize that he has a gun. Suddenly the entire scene becomes humorous, as a man in a clown mask robs half a dozen other men of millions of dollars. In the end, the mask is thrown away, and Johnny can't hide from the police.
