Dog

John's foster parents, Todd and Janelle Voight, have a dog that lives outside. When we first see their home, we pay little attention to the dog, but its bark comes back to haunt us later. The dog symbolizes the sense animals have that something is wrong. Although humans may not always realize things, the animals seem to have an extra sense.

When the T-1000 transforms into Janelle Voight, he does so just before John calls. John convinces the Terminator to allow him to call them so that he can warn them that they are in danger. When Janelle begins to be very nice to John, he quickly realizes that something is not quite right. Once he hears the dog barking furiously in the background, he realizes the truth that Janelle is dead and he is talking to the T-1000.
