As the boys go to find the dead body, they follow the railroad tracks out of town. Just as the tracks stretch on for miles in front of them, the boys' lives also stretch out in years before them. They follow the tracks as they will follow their lives in order to find adventure and purpose.
The audience also sees pain through the railroad tracks. Teddy is abused and feels unloved and unwanted. When he sees the train coming toward them, he is ready to end everything. He jumps in front and waits for the train to put him out of his misery. At that moment, the tracks begin to symbolize true friendship as Chris jumps in front of train and pulls Teddy out of the way just in the knick.....
