Cover Stories

Cover stories play an important role in Notorious. Although many of the characters retain their real identities, they must create cover stories to help disguise their true motivations. This is true both for Devlin and Alicia and for Alex and his Nazi friends; all use cover stories to disguise their actual goals.

Alicia and Devlin claim that they were friends in the U.S. Although Alex is skeptical at first, he eventually believes Alicia's story. Alicia pretends that she was in league with her father and has come to Brazil to escape the publicity in the U.S. She also pretends to be in love with Alex, even agreeing to marry him. Devlin has an easier story since it is less frequently questioned. While Alex never seems to fully believe Devlin's story, he is completely fooled by Alicia's cover.
