George Bailey is the son of the owner of the Bedford Falls Building & Loan. George has spent his whole life trying to get out of Bedford Falls, but each time he seems to have a chance, he ends up having to stay. When his father dies, George is elected to the head of the Building & Loan, so he gives up his chance at college and lets his brother, Harry, go instead. Later when Harry gets married and receives a great job offer, George sacrifices to stay home once again.

George eventually marries Mary Hatch, who has had a crush on him since they were children. Although Mary went to college, she returns home because she loves Bedford Falls.
