Summary and Analysis

It Happened One Night starts out on a boat. A woman on board, Ellie Andrews, has not been eating because she doesn't want her father, Alexander Andrews, to break up her marriage. He's been planning to have her marriage annulled. Two men bring in some food and run out. She throws the food in the floor, and he slaps her. She runs out, dives off the boat, and swims toward shore. The sailors don't catch up with her, so Alexander sends detectives to watch for her. Ellie has an old woman buy her ticket.

Peter Warne is in the phone booth with people listening everywhere. Warne's editor is angry at him for sending in a story in Greek. The editor tells him that he's fired. Warne is obviously a little drunk so.....
