From Here to Eternity is based on the days before the Pearl Harbor bombing. Unlike most films that just focus on the terrible bombing, this film focuses on the lives of the men and women at the base and emphasizes what a surprise the attack was for everyone there.

By using this historical event, the filmmakers are guaranteed to grab the attention of the audience. Many Americans are fascinated by the bombing, and thousands go to the site every year to honor those who died. The bombing also provides the film with a context that the characters are unaware of, but which is always in the audience's mind. This creates a pervasive dramatic irony, as the viewer is constantly aware of the coming danger.
