Questions how different factors and circumstances influence a person's identity. In an attempt to answer the question, evaluates a number of literary references, including Henry VI, Stand By Me, and Beneath Clouds.

The environment in which an individual grows up and the circumstances that occur within that environment play significant roles in influencing that individual's identity. Through Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 and the films Stand by Me and 8 Mile, we see three completely different environments in which the main characters function, each providing a unique insight into how an individual's identity is forged. All three stories help us to understand that identity involves more than simply how an individual is seen by himself/herself and by others.
