The environment in which an individual grows up and the circumstances that occur within that environment play significant roles in influencing that individual's identity. Through Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 and the films Stand by Me and 8 Mile, we see three completely different environments in which the main characters function, each providing a unique insight into how an individual's identity is forged. All three stories help us to understand that identity involves more than simply how an individual is seen by himself/herself and by others.
