Athens rose to greatness during the fifth century B.C, and it is fiercely believed that this ascension to greatness was due, largely in part to the immense efforts and innumerable achievements of one man; Pericles.

Pericles had a remarkable career which lasted over 30 years. Pericles entered politics in 469 BC when he was 22 years old. During his career he led Athens through many astonishing events, including his building programme and various military expeditions.

This essay is a critique of the funeral oration that the Athenian leader Pericles' once made.
