The inventions in the late 1800s of the telephone, the refrigerated railroad car, and the light bulb significantly transformed life in America. The degree to which we rely on telephones and cell phones, the freshness and variety that we receive in our food as the result of the refrigerated car, and our daily use of electricity in light bulbs and appliances make it hard to imagine that we could ever survive today without these inventions.
