Justice for Low-Wage Workers in the United States

Summary:   The author proposes that low-wage workers in the United States be more active in forming labor unions and protesting workplace injustices in order to receive the wages and just treatment they deserve.

Many low-wage workers are getting abused and taken advantage of by their boss because they are seen as an ignorant and a fool. Abuse of power is a major issue with many Americans, especially immigrants, because many of them don't have the knowledge and the experience in the United States to know that they are being treated unfair and unjust. Many people come from another country and they start working in the first job they can, to start getting paid and making a living. However, the first job will pay minimum wage and will be a hard working one. To those people that are desperate for a job, getting abused is not a matter because all they care about is getting paid. Therefore, when they are in the job they start learning that their low-wage job isn't enough to live on and getting abused isn't worth it. So what can these low-wage workers do?

I propose that these low-wage workers form a union and protest against their jobs injustice towards them. They should start by protesting to the mayor. These people should speak up and protect their rights as humans. These workers need to say how unjust they are being treated. If they form this union, then they should make a compromise with their jobs to stop the harsh conditions they work in and start getting treated better. If their jobs don't want to compromise, then they should stop working. It will be a lot of people off work and the job can't do anything without them. The boss can't do everything by himself; he needs his workers. If things go right, then the union should start moving its way up, and being recognized nationally. The government is going to be forced to improve the working environment. Things are going to get fixed one way or the other if this union is formed. All of this can work, but it is up to the low-wage workers to decide what they are going to do.

Many workers might object to this proposal because they can't afford to be off their job. They need to be working to pay their bills and maintain themselves. This way of thinking is what holds all these workers back from succeeding. In order for them to get a change, they must be willing to change their attitude.

Despite the objections presented by these workers, my proposal should be enacted because of the following reasons:

  • Forming this union will benefit the current low-wage workers as well as the future ones. They will be treated the way they are supposed to. The future workers will be grateful because they won't have to go through what others went.
  • Also, forming this union would lead to a raise due to their hard work. The bosses of low-wage workers would see that they work too hard and earn too little money. The bosses would take that into consideration and it would be a great benefit for them.
  • Finally, this union might even help illegal immigrants to get papers so they can be able to work and live in the United States. People don't complain about their bosses abusing them because they are scared that their boss would snitch on them. That would leave them with no job and that is something they don't want.
Forming a union of low-wage workers would be a great and beneficial change to them because they will get the respect and treatment they deserve. They could get so many things with the union because they will be protected by government and nobody will abuse them. Every low-wage worker will be happy and all they have to do is unite and fight together.
