Summary: On June 17, 1962, a bleak day in America's history, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the atheist who was desperately trying to get school prayer banned, that school prayer clashed with the First Amendment, and was therefore deemed unconstitutional.
School-Sanctioned Prayer

Whether or not school-led prayer should be brought back into the public school system is an very controversial subject. On June 17, 1962, a bleak day in America's history, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the atheist who was desperately trying to get school prayer banned, that school prayer clashed with the First Amendment, and was therefore deemed unconstitutional. Basically, the First Amendment allows everyone living in the United States to say what they think and not to worry that the state or federal government will interfere in any way with their religion. The controversy is because some people believe that school prayer is part of the freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and others believe that school prayer doesn't belong in schools, that allowing school prayer would lead to religious intolerance.
