The Lost Generation of "The Sun Also Rises"

Summary:   Ernest Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" follows five friends in their lives, travels and relationships during their time of meaningless existence during the post-World War I era.


Ernest Hemingway's, The Sun Also Rises, was written in the 1920's during the post World War 1 era. The novel explores the life, travels, and relationships of five friends: Jacob Barnes, Lady Brett Ashley, Robert Cohn, Bill Gorton, and Mike Cambell. Moreover Hemingway wrote this novel during an era when the generation wandered aimlessly in a world that appeared meaningless. This generation was known as the Lost Generation, in that they had no direction, nothing to fall back on, and nothing to look forward to. Hemingway explores many themes but the most important one covers the struggles within the Lost Generation. Specifically, Hemingway shows this theme through the aimlessness, apathy, amorality, and insecurity of the Lost Generation. The Lost Generation is a result of the destructive power of World War 1, given that war destroys more.....
