There have been many arguments over what depression is. Some people think that depression is how a person feels during a hard time in their life, which is partly true. The scientific definition of depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, which happens during different time periods in ones life. Dating back 3000 years ago in Egypt there were already books describing depression. Saul, the King of Israel experienced an "evil spirit" and committed suicide. His depression caused him to be "incapacitated, Guilt-ridden and hopelessness." In the middle ages it was thought that depression was a punishment from God. Now with the knowledge we have about the human body we know that hormones in the brain cause depression.
