"Shakespeare Presents Leontes as a Tyrant Who Must Be Punished"

Summary: At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare has presented Leontes as a good king, a loving father and husband, a generous friend and most importantly a good man. However he becomes processed by a violent fit of jealousy that transforms his personality and wreaks destruction and chaos on those around him.
In order to answer this question I must look at the different ways Shakespeare has presented Leontes as a tyrant and as a man who is a victim of his own jealousy and pride. Finally I will discuss my own view of Leontes as a character of the play.

At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare has presented Leontes as a good king, a loving father and husband, a generous friend and most importantly a good man. However he becomes processed by a violent fit of jealousy that transforms his personality and wreaks destruction and chaos on those around him. By mentioning Polixenes' and Leontes' happy childhood together, which was "rooted betwixt them" and showing Leontes' keenness for Polixenes to remain in Sicilia despite already spending nine months there Shakespeare is highlighting the kind nature of the Leontes that is first presented to us.
