America is giving its badly needed money to undeserving people. Social Security benefit requirements must be revised because there are more eligible retirees every year, and government money is being wasted on illegal aliens and drug addicts.

Every year there are more retirees eligible for SSI. "The elderly population aged 60 years and above grew from 97,528 (8.6%) to 109,180 (9.1%)" (7) from 1996 to 2001. The population has been rising steadily since then. America must reward retirees. The are other beneficiaries too. If a family member dies there are often benefits for the family. The number of widows ages 15 to 59 has raised 9.9% from 1996 to 2001(7). These are deserving Americans that are being neglected by the government.

The law in the U.S. has stated since 1997 that if one is on social security based on a drug addiction or alcoholism that they may no long have it. However if one believes that they would be disabled even if they quit the drug they may continue receiving their benefits. (1) It is unfair that a person with a self-inflicted disability should get social security, let alone someone that breaks the law. Why should someone that breaks the law receive money while there are upstanding citizens that need it more? It is unfair, why reward a criminal? The only help those people deserve is help getting into rehab or jail, it should be their choice.

Also in the U.S. the states that an illegal alien may be paid for work done in the U.S. if they return to Mexico or if they become naturalized citizens. Illegal aliens are criminals. The U.S. is discussing entering into a totalization agreement with Mexico. "With Social Security having projections of insolvency a Bush Administration plan would hasten that crisis by sending hundreds of millions of dollars in Social Security payment to Mexican citizens living in Mexico--including those who have worked illegally in the United States"(4). This means that the U.S. is literally paying people to break into the country. Yes I agree that we should help our neighbors, however, if your family was starving would you give your last 20 dollars to your starving neighbor? I don't think so. The U.S. must deal with its citizens before helping other countries.

If the U.S. does not change its stance on social security, soon people will not be paid enough to keep up with cost of living increases. It is the government's duty to notice these problems and fix them before it is too late. Hard working American citizens deserve this money, not drug addicts or illegal aliens.
