Alonzo Quijano, also known as "Don Quixote" was an older man, which was an estate owner of La Mancha in Spain. He is obsessed with the books in his library that talk of chivalry and the honor of knighthood. He is so obsessed that he sets out to become a knight.
He starts out with only himself and his horse with an old, rusty set of armor. As he journeys out of the town, he stops by nearby Toboso. There he imagines that a peasant girl is his "Lady Dulcinea" but really goes by the name of Aldonza Lorenza. He embarks on his journey of "chivalry" and after injuring innocent mule drivers to earn himself money and a squire, he returns to recruit Sancho Panza as his squire promising him that he would be a wealthy governor of an island. Sancho, being a poor married farmer with a family of his own, accepts under the assumption that he will soon be able to provide a better way of living for himself and also his family. Together, the two travel on their pointless journey ironically enough doing the exact opposite of what Don Quixote plans to accomplish and instead of helping the innocent, only hurting them and in the process also gets Sancho beaten around numerous times by an unruly bunch.
Despite Sancho's bruised bones and muscles, he stays loyal still under the assumption that he is acquiring an island for his service. Further along in their journey, the town priest and barber set out to bring him home safely. They wind up luring him into getting trapped in a crate and shipping him back home before he does too much damage.
In the next volume, a college student seeks Don Quixote and Sancho out after reading a book of their adventures written by Sadi Hamid. The two of them set out on yet another journey of "righting wrongs" and also to seek out the Lady Dulcinea that Sancho supposedly delivered a letter to in volume one. Sancho points out a random woman and claims that it is Don's lady. Don Quixote immediately comes to the conclusion that the "evil magicians" cast a curse on her that made her seem a peasant girl only in Don's eyes.
Later, they meet a Duke and Duchess that have also read the book about their journeys. The Duke and Duchess decide to play tricks on the two adventurers by creating a false reality for Don and Sancho to play out their fantasies in. One particularly mean trick was the story of the cursed "Lady Dulcenea" who could only be disenchanted if Sancho whipped himself 3,300 times on his bare backside. They also gave Sancho an "island" and made him governor only to make his short reign a living nightmare. They also made Sancho go through abuse to "revive" the lady that supposedly died because of her unfulfilled love for Don.
Later, Don is faced in "battle" by Sampson Carrasco disguised as a knight and told that if he lost the battle, that he had to lay down his life of chivalry and return home never to practice the ways of knighthood again. After Don loses, he keeps to his word and returns home. Not long after returning home, he becomes deathly ill and decides to face reality and live the rest of his short life as Alonso Quijano, the man he really is. Shortly after regaining his sanity, he passes away peacefully.
