Joseph Mengele was a charming, cheerful and handsome young man. He fought in the war between 1940-1942. After that he became a doctor at Auschwitz death camp. At Auschwitz he performed cruel experiments on twins, hoping to find a way to get rid of inferior gene strands, to create a German super race. Although his experimentation did not contribute to this nor did it have to do with any true scientific research. He selected who would die and who would live and got pleasure out of degrading, torturing and murdering innocent people. Although he was so cruel and sick he still acted charming and kind. Dr. Joseph Mengele was never brought to justice and was found after he died 35 years after the camp was liberated.
Joseph Mengele was born March 16, 1911 in Gunzburg, Bavaria. He had two younger brothers, Alois and Karl Jr. His father, Karl Mengele was a local industrialist who owned his own business manufacturing farming equipment. His mother Walburga had a terrible temper, was cold hearted and was described as incapable of loving. She demanded respect and obedience from her three sons. She made sure that her sons strictly studied the faith of the catholic church. Joseph was remembered as a bright, cheerful and handsome boy. He was recognized as ambitious and an articulate speaker with a personal charm. He wanted a career away from the family business and away from his home town, Gunzburg. He planned a career in science or anthropology. In 1930 he graduated from high school and went to the University of Munich. Munich was the capitol of Bavaria and the heart of a growing National Socialist movement led by Adolf Hitler. There he was a student of philosophy and medicine.
In 1930 the nazi party was the second largest party in Germany. In 1931 Joseph joined an organization called the Steel Helmets. He studied anthropology, paleontology and medicine. He had a passion and interest of the secrets of genetics and wanted to reveal the source of deformities and imperfections. Known German academics and medical professionals had a theory of unworthy life, which were the jews. Joseph tried to gain respect as a scientific researcher and as someone advancing the perfection of the German race. In 1937 he became an official member of the Nazi party. In 1938, he was 28 years old and became a member of the SS, which was a group of elite race guardians. This same year he got his medical degree and started military training.
In 1939 the war started. Between 1940 and 1942 he was trying to distinguish himself as a soldier. In 1942 he was wounded at the Russian front, this prevented him from returning to war.
So he was sent to Berlin where his mentor and professor was also stationed. By this time they knew of the "Final Solution." In May of 1943 Joseph Mengele was assigned to the death camp, Auschwitz.
Mengele's mission was to get the secrets of human genetics from living twin specimens that were given to him at Auschwitz. He reserved barracks for his children, which became nicknamed as "The Zoo." He also experimented on cripples, dwarfs and others with deformities. The twins were his favorite and got special treatment. Such as the could keep their own hair and clothing. They also got extra food and weren't beaten or forced to work. The guards made sure they were taken care of. Mengele wanted to keep them healthy for experimentation. The twins had to fill out a questionnaire then were weighed and measured. Mengele took blood samples from them everyday and sent them to Von Verschuer in Berlin.
Mengele injected blood from one twin into another twin that had a different blood type then recorded the reaction. These injections resulted in a painful headache and a high fever that lasted several days. He also wanted to see if he could change the eye color by putting chemicals into their eyes. This resulted in pain and sometimes blindness. If the test subject died he would then pin their eyes on the wall of his office. He also castrated or sterilized many twins. Mengele also did experiments to see how long they could endure something. Such as injecting them with diseases and seeing how long they would live. He also tested how long someone could live under freezing conditions, high altitude and how long they could endure being shocked by high voltage electricity. His experimentation had nothing to do with true scientific research.
At Auschwitz Dr. Mengele was given the power to select who died and who lived. He would overdo the murder policies . When hundreds of jews arrived at Auschwitz he would make the selection,if he pointed his cane to the left they were sent to the gas chambers to be killed but if he pointed to the right they would live and go work. He sent most of them to their deaths. He made the selections easily. Even the selections he wasn't assigned to go to, he went any ways. He got a pleasure from killing people and having the power to do so. He loved drawing blood, sometimes while taking blood samples he would let one of his children bleed to death. The barracks and its inhabitants were the foulest sanitary conditions. Diseases such as typhus were rampant and diarrhea, lice, vermin and fleas dominated. He acted charming and nice to the women and made his victims sexually desire him then he would send them to die. He had two sides, he acted nice and gave candy to those he would torture and do his barbaric experimentation on.
An example of his cruelty is when he put 14 pairs of gypsy twins asleep then injected chloroform into their hearts which killed them. Then he dissected each one and made notes on every part. He also would do sex changes and he sewed two twins together. Mengele would also inject them with lethal germs. He performed all of his surgeries without anesthesia and removed organs and limbs without any pain killer. He would also dissect infants, alive. Once he caught a woman on her sixth attempt to escape, he screamed at her and brutally beat her head continuously until her face was battered into a bloody mess. He degraded women by having them parade in front of him nude, having to describe their sexual lives to him.
When the crematoria was full Mengele ordered trenches to be dug, gasoline to be poured and lit and then gave orders to throw the dead and alive into the trenches. Mengele did all of this with relish. When ten dump trucks arrived full of children, he ordered that they all be put in the flaming trench. The ones that climbed out would be pushed back in. Joseph Mengele killed 3,000 twins and ordered many other jews to be killed with relish, passion and devotion. Mengele is known as the Angel of Death.
Before Auschwitz was liberated Megele and the other doctors destroyed most of the evidence of their experiments. After Auschwitz was liberated Mengele was captured as a prisoner of war but was released because the U.S. army didn't know he was part of the SS. Then he escaped to Argentina. He hid for 35 years using various aliases. On February 7,1979 he had a stroke while swimming in the ocean and drowned. He was never brought to justice. Only 200 of his victims survived.
Why did Joseph Mengele get satisfaction out of degrading, torturing and murdering all of those innocent people? Mengele turned mad with the power he was given. He wanted to get rid of the gene strands that created twins, cripples, dwarfs and deformities so he could create a German super race. He wanted to kill the unworthy of living. He attended lectures of Dr. Ernst Rudin who said that the doctors had a responsibility to destroy unworthy life. His mother being cold hearted could have also contributed to why he committed these atrocities. He also had a passion and devotion to the Nazi vision to make to Aryan race superior to all others and to annihilate all that is inferior to it. No one is sure how once such a charming, kind young man could get such pleasure out of performing his sick painful experiments and put so many to their deaths.

One reason Mengele had no problem with killing is because the Nazis had a vision that the Jews were unworthy of life, he wanted to make the Aryan race superior.
