How Should Columbus Be Remembered?

Summary:   Columbus "discovered" America, meaning he found land previously unknown to Europeans. However, he cannot be considered a hero because of the barbaric and devastating way in which he treated the native people.


How Should Columbus be Remembered ?

In 1492 Christopher Columbus and his three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Nina, set sail from the port of Palos on the Gulf of Cadiz in hopes of finding an alternate route to Asia and looking for financial gain. On October 12, 1492, they spotted land, which he believed to be an island off the coast of China but turned out to be what is now known as the Bahamas. Columbus deserves credit for discovering a previously unknown land to the Europeans, but should be remembered not as a hero, but as the greedy, barbaric capitalist he was. He does not deserve the reputation of an American hero because of the way he exploited the natives and their land, the brutal way he treated these people, and.....
