The Importance of Literacy

The glowing embers of the fire warm me while the winter wind lashes against our house. I sit in our family chair, the upholstered pattern barely discernible from years of use. With a mug of hot chocolate in one and my favorite book in the other, I commence my relaxing evening doing what I love best: reading.

Reading has always been important to my family. Both of my parents read to my sisters and me when we were young. I believe that is why, to this day, reading is one of my favorite pastimes. Reading has the power to soothe and relax me after a long day; there is nothing I look forward to more. Literature enchants me. I remember the first time I read the Harry Potter books--they transported me to a completely different place. I felt as if I belonged to that magical world and I clung to it with eagerness, feeling released of all my insecurities and free to explore and discover new places. When I read, the rest of the world does not matter; it ceases to exist. All else seems to fade away as I delve deeper and deeper into the pages in front of me. The mundane activities of everyday life transform into something much more interesting; my mind opens to new thoughts and inspiring ideas and I am led to give others a glimpse of the inspiration I have received. One of my new favorite poems is "Ulysses" by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Soaking in the beautiful diction of that work of art creates in me a desire to travel, learn, and experience--to change the world and do something constructive to help humanity.

While I love reading, I also enjoy writing. Up until recently, I found writing quite cumbersome, as I did not enjoy writing papers, reports, and even poetry. However, I have learned to genuinely express myself through my writings and poetry. Free verse poetry and even keeping a simple journal sparks me to think deeper. I use writing for an outlet of my thoughts and emotions. Both reading and writing instill in me a desire to learn; I crave knowledge and am satisfied by simply an intriguing book or a pen and lined paper. Penning my thoughts down on parchment compels me to do something with my life--to go above and beyond the expectations placed on me and fulfill my destiny.

I believe literacy is a gift we all take for granted, and that saddens me because many people do not realize just how essential reading and writing skills are. So many times on any given day I communicate with people through writing. Whether it is an email or just a quick note, I enjoy attempting to communicate a point or share my thoughts. While driving to school or walking through the mall, my mind is continuously bombarded with countless billboards and signs, all reinforcing the importance of literacy. Without reading or writing, our society could not function; chaos would ensue and no one would be able to effectively understand anyone else, save for a few incomprehensible grunts and gestures. In an age where learning abounds, we should not adopt a caveman mentality towards literacy.

I am bothered by the notion that technology could impede the advancement of reading and writing. It is imperative that society embrace the power of language and not merely the power of science. I would not want my children or children's children to miss out on the pure joy of curling up in front of the fireplace to enjoy a great book.
