It is hard for many immigrants to make it as a US citizen. In the book Buried Onions by Gary Soto, he describes how hard it really was for a Mexican to make it in America. There were many hardships in life for the Mexicans or any non-American. In this book the main character Eddie is trying to make it. He his trying to fit in to his all white community in Fresno, California. His father and cousins are all dead due to gang violence and his mother is living with her sister in San Francisco. Both of them are coke fiends.
Eddie dropped out of the community college her was attending. He dropped out shortly after his cousin Jesus was killed at a nightclub. Eddie is making a living by painting numbers on the concrete in front of peoples houses and like most Mexicans do he fixes cars. The old white people always ask him " what's the matter you dirty Mexican can't find a better job?"
Eddie looks at the world as a big onion. One day the big onion will grow and the whole world would cry and would be filled with sadness. Although Eddie is trying to stay out of trouble his aunt is trying to get him to seek revenge on his cousins killer. There is many ways that the criminals in Fresno are dealt with. One way is for them to be killed and buried like onions with the other people they killed or two they could just be left alone. Left to kill more innocent people. Since Eddies family is in the United States illegally there is nothing there can be done by the police. These people have to go through things that we Americans would never see. The way white people treated immigrants and blacks are horrible. Maybe if the tables were turned then the harsh treatment would stop.
The book also tells how the struggle was. When Eddie went to visit one of his homies, there would be a numerous amount of children around. There would be as many as 5 families s living in one small apartment. Since the only jobs that they could get is low paying jobs many people had to live in one house so that the rent could get paid. Many of the Mexicans living in the United States didn't have more than an elementary school education they had knowledge of very little. One man said to Eddie while he was searching for a job "People don't want to hire dummies in their businesses." Although this hurt him badly he couldn't let it show. He let out all of his anger and all of his pain but working on his car. An old beat up Chevy. In the end Eddie opened up his own business and all of the people who brought down his moral was coming to him for help. Eddie stuck to being the good person he is and helped. Even though he was treated like trash, he showed those people that it doesn't matter what race you are or where you come from. People of all ki
