Summary: In the Civil War novel "The Red Badge of Courage" by Steven Crane, the character of Henry grows from adolescence to adulthood as a soldier. The novel's main themes are a boy becoming a man, courage, human reaction to war, disrespect for human life and self-preservation.

The Red Badge of Courage by Steven Crane is set in the time of the Civil War. The regiment is either in the woods of the south camping or in the clearings fighting various battles together. It is mucky and miserable.

The main characters in the story are all Union Troops within a single regiment. The author only refers to the main character as the Youth, you later find out that his name is Henry. He is a young man about nineteen and joined the army because he wanted to be a man and liked the idea of being a soldier. At the beginning of the story he is really unconfident, self-conscious, and frightened. There is a man in Henry's regiment is referred to as the tall soldier, is confident, outspoken, and proud.
