Developing Technology
The development of technology is changing our world. You can now carry about 1000 songs on an object the size of a credit card or watch your favourite TV shows on a high definition television. Last year it was surveyed and found that in our world there are more computers in the city of New York than there are in the whole continent of Africa, but is this development making our world better or worse?
Before computers were made all work was done on paper, either by writing or using a typewriter which took a long time and effort but then computers were introduced, originally to help army and medical research so they could share their findings but then they expanded into offices to help with their work and then to almost every home. This lets us have an almost unlimited supply of knowledge and lets us find out news stories everyday. This easy access to knowledge is one of the main benefits of this development in technology. For older or disabled people this technology can be very useful. They can order their weekly groceries and have them delivered to their door which would mean not having to leave the house during the cold winter days when it is too cold to walk there. Obviously this would make their lives easier, and they would feel more independent, organising for themselves rather than relying on friends and neighbours.
One of the ever expanding areas of this new technology is the mobile phone. In the last 10 years mobile phones have been more common among youths, usually more of a fashion statement than a necessity, there was an article in the paper saying children as young as 6 years old own them and know how to use them. Texting has become a more common way of communicating between mobiles and is used mainly in Europe and Asia because it was cheaper than calling and then later introduced into America. Some people just think it is a waste of time slow, awkward and difficult to get the hang of but personally I think it is quite addictive and a good, cheep way to get a short message to my friends to find out where and when u r meeting them which helps you to have more social contact with friends.
Admittedly mobiles have dangers too, mainly traffic accidents caused by people using them when driving, but recent legislation give a £500 fine for doing that has led to a decrease in the accidents, also when someone crosses the road while talking on their phone they do not pay attention to the road sometimes causing them to get hit by cars.
New technology of course, will always bring problems too. Not everyone has access to this technology; statistics say that 700 million people in India alone have never seen a computer. In the past 20 years the velocity of the change in computer technology has accelerated so fast that be time you buy a certain model a new one is released the next day causing you to constantly upgrade. One of the main concerns with these new computers is that children can end up playing a computer game or chatting to their friends online all day and not get any exercise or social contact with their friends.
I personally feel that the development of technology is changing our world for the better but soon someone could take it a step too far.
