Racism and discrimination is a world wide dilemma. Every where we go we either see or experience it. Even ourselves, we might not realize it but we have discriminated others. For example, in our school students sit with their own ethnicity. In the media minorities are seldom seen, and society itself has been discriminating.
We see an abundance of discrimination in school. During a students lunch break they are most likely to sit with their own ethnicity or culture. Why do they do this? You could say they have more in common with each other. They feel belong, they have a sense of protection with each other. Why do the Asians sit with the Asians and the Africans sit with the Africans? To be in a group of your own you have a better chance to defend yourself when being picked on. Being in a group means you can help each other when times are rough. You are from the same background and can relate to the abuse . But why do some cultures act out against one another? They want to be praised by other peers for their action. If the bully or offender sees a sign of weakness they often lash out at it. If someone doesn't look like you, does that makes them different and should be isolated from society? Just because their eyes are a slanted or they speak a different language other than English, does that not make them human? Children who are out cast, loners or just plain different are the most likely to be constantly being picked on. But where do children get the influence from to discriminate? The media.
In the media is where we see racism and stereotypes that influence children. We see it on Television, all the stereotypes about minorities. Minorities have insignificant roles on TV or ads. They are pushed aside. Even when there are TV they being laughed on or jokes made to them. Some stereotypes are all Asians are Chinese or they can't speak English correctly and everything they own is bootleg. Spanish people are slow and only thing they eat is taco and burritos. On a magazine who do you usually see on the cover? A beautiful white woman. We hardly see minorities or any other race. On TV you see sitcoms or reality shows and who do you see most often? Whites on television are portrayed as smarter, richer authority figures, while minorities usually African American are shown as poor, lazy, silly, and criminals. When people see Latinos, they think of gangs. When Asians people get on TV they're usually in the background they don't let them speak. Then there's society.
Society has a major role to play. About to weeks ago Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Mississippi, and Louisiana. It took more then fives days for help to come. People say since the majority of the population was African-American it took so long. When people where looting, when a white person does it, its just for survival they just getting food. But when a black person does it they call it stealing and call special forces down to sniper people down. If it was any other race, would help came faster?
But why is racism still around? Hasn't it ended since the Civil Rights movement? Parents are still holding grudges and influencing their children. The media teaches children not to be different. That everyone had to be the same. Society isn't much a role model either. In order to eliminate discrimination we have to do it one school at a time then every city, state and maybe the country.
