Ball Berring and Honey

Summary: The speed of the ball bearing accelerated when it moved through the honey, because of the gap between the ball and the edge of the cylinder which let the honey through. The speed changes when it hits an air bubble then it returns to its normal accelerating speed.
Aim:

To determine if a ball bearing moves through a measuring cylinder filled with honey at a constant speed or at an accelerating speed.

Materials:

  • Stopwatch
  • Ruler
  • Sealed measuring cylinder filled with honey and a ball bearing
Method:
  1. Gather equipment and set it up as shown.
  2. Stand the cylinder up so the ball is on the bottom at 0mL.
  3. Turn cylinder up side down, starting the stopwatch at the same time.
  4. Stop the stopwatch when it reaches 20mL, at the same time, start the second stopwatch.
  5. Record time for 0mL- 20mL.
  6. Clear the time for the first stopwatch.
  7. Stop the second stopwatch when it reaches 40mL, at the same time, start the first stopwatch again.
  8. Record time for 20mL - 40mL.
  9. Repeat for every 20mL interval up to 100mL.
  10. Record results and observations.
Conclusion:

The aim of the experiment was to determine if a ball bearing moves through...
