Summary:
A comparison between the protagonist Wart and the antagonist Kay in TH White's story The Sword in the Stone.
In the story, The sword in the stone by T.H. White, Wart is the protagonist and Kay is the antagonist but unlike in other stories, where one is good, kind, polite and one is evil, sneaky, selfish and rude, in this story they have a relationship and in some ways are quite similar.
The relationship that is shared between Wart and Kay is that of brothers and competitors for the crown. Wart admires and respects Kay because he is suppose to be the next king and because one day he is suppose to become a knight also, but for Kay there is always the likeliness that he could loose all of that And Wart could take his place so he becomes very defensive against Wart at times. They also are classmates who share an education together although Kay learns mostly how to be a knight and things such as that while Wart spends time with Merlin learning valuable life lessons by going on adventures.
Wart and Kay are alike in that they both are young royalty eager to learn how to become proper men based on the standards that they are expected to meet .Both Kay and the Wart have aspirations to become a knight and king one day. Also both characters have and will face a situation that will change their lives, for Kay it will be when he becomes king and for wart it was when he got lost in the forest and met Merlin and he became his tutor.
Although Wart and Kay share a few things in common they are more different then they are alike. For one thing their personalities are completely different. Wart is kind and respectful to others, such as when he first met Archimedes and learned he could speak Wart did his best to be courteous and respectful. He is also kind to others because he is close friends with the dogs when no one else would have anything to do with him. Kay on the other hand has no patience; like for example when Cully flew away Kay did not take the time to look for him. He was also jealous when he began noticing that the Wart spent more time with Merlin than he did. Another way Kay is different from the wart is that he is spoiled; everyone treats him with the utmost respect and gives him whatever he desires. To others Wart is insignificant and they are not as respectful to him as they are to Kay.
Every story has a protagonist and antagonist as does The sword in the stone but the only difference is that these two characters in this particular story share a common relationship unlike in many other stories. I believe Wart and Kay are different from each other because of how they were brought up and what they were raised to believe because since Kay was always treated better he became selfish but because Wart was raised to believe that Kay was better, he grew up admiring him and wishing to be him.
