Things were a lot different than today's modern world that we see. As we know this play was set on the 16th century, the role of the parents was to bring up their children to be obedient. The parents at the time thought that whenever their daughter had their first period, they were considered as a woman and was prepared/ready to get married with any man that would fit in to the family. However the children were not in control of their own lives. The power and control rested in the parent's hands as they were responsible for organising the arranged marriage.
