From the mention of the beast in the very beginning of the story to Ralph running for his life in the last chapter, fear is what spurs the conflicts in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. The fear that plays a significant role in the plot is personified and represented through the beast, which symbolizes the evil residing within everyone as well as the dark side of human nature. From this illusion, that is created in the boys' minds as a reaction to various events that occur throughout the development of the story, come out many conflicts such as brutal murder, savagery, irrational and uncivilized decision-making, and the resurfacing of the beast that lies deep within the schoolboys.
