Focus on Offred, the Main Character of "the Handmaid's Tale"
The main character of the novel The Handmaid’s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood is the mid-aged woman Offred. Offred lives in the Republic of Gilead, a future dystopian society in which all the people are controlled by the state. The story she tells deals with her life in this totalitarian system and how her character develops in the course of time.
Offred has a very important function. She does not only represent one of the many individual fates of people living in Gilead, but also represent the basic wish and search for liberty and freedom of every human. The Handmaid’s Tale is about constant changes between the “outer world” of Gilead and the “inner world” of Offred’s state of mind which contrast, depend and interact with one another.
