The History of Jeans

Summary:   Jeans were invented by Levi Strauss. Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria in 1829. In 1853, Levi turned strong canvas cloth which he was originally going to sell for tents and wagon covers into pants. He made the pair of pants because of miners. A miner had written and told him that miners needed a pair of pants that would not tear or rip.

Have you ever wondered who started the making of jeans or how jeans got started? Have you ever thought why do I wear them or why do other people wear them? Have you ever wondered why people do not wear them? Through the years jeans have changed in many ways and have come to be worn by more and more people.

It is very fascinating how jeans got started with Levi Strauss. A pair of these jeans cost about twenty two cents. Levi had planned on making his money by looking for gold, but he started with the small amount of brown tinted cotton cloth he had. In 1902 Levi died. He left his company to his four nephews by the names of Sigmund, Jacob, Louis and Abraham Stern. In 1928 Walter Haas became president and stayed president until 1955.

Through he jeans history their history, the styles of Levi Jeans have changed in several ways. In 1878 Adolf von Baeyer made a formula for a synthetic indigo dyeing. Indigo was first made from plants. In 1886, Levi added a leather patch featuring a company publicity stunt. During the 1890's, Levi added a small pocket that was used to carry change and pocket watches. In 1905, Levi added a fifth wallet pocket. During the early 1920's Levi's added belt loops replacing suspender buttons. If buyers wanted suspender buttons, they were given snap on buttons. Levi Strauss & Co. sewed a small red flag next to the back pocket of the Levi Jeans in 1936. That was the very first label to be sewn on the outside of a piece of clothing. In 1969 Levi Strauss started to sell bell- bottomed jeans.

Through time different people have been wearing Levi jeans for many different reasons. Miners wore jeans because they needed something tough. In 1872 a miner wrote to Levi Strauss & Co. telling the company that they needed to have metal rivets to reinforce the seams and pockets from tearing. In 1939 soldiers wore their Levi pants and jackets overseas during World War II. Children and teenagers wore jeans because they had saw movie stars wearing jeans in the movies which influenced them to wear jeans. Cowboys' wore their jeans because they needed something that was comfortable when they were on a saddle. They also wore jeans because the jeans looked good with the cowboy boots they wore. Mechanics and other workers wore jeans because they work in grimy environments.

Jeans would not have gotten to where they are today without Levi Strauss, the man and the Levi Company. Jeans have changed in several ways including their style and their consumers. The people who wear jeans have worn them for many different reasons.
