Why Did Stalin Rather Than Trotsky Emerge as the Leader of the Ussr in 1929?
Summary: After Lenin's death in 1924, there was a power struggle for the control of the USSR until Stalin emerged as its leader in 1929. First, Stalin had all the skills needed to survive this power struggle. Second, Trotsky, unlike Stalin, was not good at playing the game of politics. Last but not least, Stalin was lucky that Lenin's Testament was not read out openly. This was because Lenin had a stroke that left him paralysed and unable to speak, and his wife had decided not to reveal its contents in hope of Lenin's eventual recovery.
After Lenin's death in 1924, there was a power struggle for the control of the USSR until Stalin emerged as its leader in 1929. Why did Stalin rather than Trotsky, who had led the army during the Russian Civil War, gain control of the USSR? I feel that there are three main reasons for this, and I shall explain them below.
Firstly, Stalin had all the skills needed to survive this power struggle.
Stalin was a cunning man. He was able to use his position as General Secretary of the ruling Communists Party to appoint his own supporters to key positions in the party. This position also allowed him to control the membership of the party. He brought in members whom he knew were likely to support him, while he expelled members who were likely to support Trotsky.
