Summary: An overview of tobacco, including where most tobacco plants are grown, what they contain, the products in which it is used, and the short-term and long-term effects it can have on one's health and well-being. Issues related to addiction and to the role of tobacco companies are also covered.
Tobacco, a plant grown in tropical America and of the genus Nicotiana, is inserted in cigarettes, cigars, smoking pipes, and chewing tobacco. The products of tobacco, cigarettes for example, contain 11 elements known to cause cancer, among other diseases. These diseases can be deadly and very harmful to the human body. Such diseases caused by tobacco are: cancer, heart disease, and gum disease. Many of the effects caused by tobacco may result in death. Some other fatal effects are emphysema and strokes. Long term effects include asthma and early signs of aging. It is also possible to contract a disease through secondhand smoking, which is inhaling another person's tobacco smoke. 50,000 people die each year from secondhand smoke alone. Many of the firsthand and secondhand effects are similar, but those who inhale the chemicals firsthand are more liable to contract a fatal disease. In fact, smoking causes about 445 new cases...
