Theme of the Joy Luck Club: Mother's Love

Summary:   In The Joy Luck Club, one of the themes of this novel is mother's love. Mother's love is great and unchanging.

In the novel The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan, the author emphasizes the strength of a mother's love. Mother's love of their children is great and lasts over time. They always think about their children first. They always give the best things to their children and leave the worst for themselves. Everything they do is for the best of their children. Mother's love is one of the most valuable things in the world.

Sometimes, mothers pretend they do not care about their children, but actually their love of the children is unchanging. In The Joy Luck Club, even though Lindo's mother sends Lindo to live with the Huangs when she is very young and "treats her as if she belongs to somebody else", she loves her daughter very much. Before Lindo leaves, her mother gives her "a necklace that is made out of a tablet of red jade." Lindo's mother is very sad and her heart is bleeding at that moment. If a mother does not love her daughter, she will not give her daughter a necklace that is so precious. The necklace is very valuable because it is full of Lindo's mother's love. Mother's love is worth more than everything.

Children always quarrel with their mothers but this does not affect the mother's love of their children at all. In The Joy Luck Club, although Waverly hurts Lindo so much as "she tells her mother to shut up", Lindo does not leave Waverly alone. When she has a fever, Lindo sits next to Waverly's bed and takes care of her for the whole night. It shows how unconditional a mother's love is. This kind of love does not only show in the book, but also shows in reality. Most of the children in the present time are not very respectful and they always yell at their mother. This behavior is very rude and hurtful, but that still cannot stop the mothers from loving their children. Mother's love of their children will never change, regardless of any condition.

Mothers show their love to their children through actions, not just by saying how much they love you. In the novel, there are two crabs left on the platter after everybody picks the best quality one. Shuyuan stops Jing-mei from taking the worst one "which has the torn-off leg" and tells her to have "the large one with a faded orange color." Shuyuan knows the crab with a missing leg is dead before she cooks it and has a bad taste, so she gives the good one to her daughter and leaves the bad one for herself. Although it is not a very big move, readers can easily feel Shuyuan's love for her daughter. In reality, many mothers are just like Shuyuan. They work diligently from morning till night to earn money. They spend most of the money on their children, but not on themselves. Mothers who share their love are as generous as the sun which distributes sunshine everyday.

In the whole world, mothers are the people who care about their children the most. They always protect their children from danger. No matter how bad and naughty their children are, their love of the children will not change. Mother's love is selfless and powerful, but many children do not appreciate their mothers and complain about their mothers. They think their mothers are supposed to love them and care about them. But this is not true. There is no such a law that stipulates mothers must love their children and mothers do not go to jail if they do not love their children. Mother's love is all from their heart. So, children should learn to appreciate their mother and treasure their love.
