Having commitment towards something is displayed throughout the novel as the main theme in James Hilton's modernist novel, Goodbye Mr. Chips. Goodbye Mr. Chips is about the life of an English schoolmaster, Mr. Chipping (better knows as Mr. Chips), after he came to teach at Brookfield Elementary in 1870. During his life, while teaching there, many important events happened. He married as a middle-aged man to a young, attractive, and talented woman, survived throughout the entirety of World War I, lived through his wife's and only son's deaths, and continued on to teach generation upon generation of students until his death when he was in his eighties. Throughout all of his life's events, Mr. Chips always seemed to have a close connection and commitment toward Brookfield Elementary.
