Mao Vs Ghandi Essay

Summary:   Both Mao and Gandhi made their countries what they are today socially, economically, and politically. Both by taking the same things and using them in different ways. Gandhi on one hand was more peaceful and did not believe in war.

Gandhi vs. Mao

Mao and Gandhi became key leaders in each of their countries, India and china. Although they both wanted very similar things to happen to their countries, they used very different tactics. The main points in their rules where economical, political and social. And all points affected their people in many ways.

First, to make each of their countries stronger economically Ghandi and Mao changed laws and broke rules. During the British rule in India there was a salt tax, which made it very hard for the people of china to buy salt, but it was illegal for them to make their own salt. Because Ghandi did not think this tax was righteous, on. In 1930, March 12th, he and eighty other people walked in the "salt march." The salt march was a walk of approximately 240 miles to the Arabian see where they could make salt, illegally. Many people found the "salt march" meaning full. And Ghandi became a larger economic leader. Another way that Gandhi made India more powerful economically was spinning and wearing the traditional clothing of India. By doing this all people of India did not purchase and western clothes, which knocked a chunk out of the British economy thus adding to end of British rule in India, and making the country of India wealthier because they were not buying western clothes owned, buy British shopkeepers. On the other hand Mao did not have a government to battle against to make china more powerfully economically. When Mao and his followers where on the long march they would go through small villages and towns taking the land away from the land owners and give the land to the peasants who worked on the land, who had been kept in poverty by the landowners for many years. This made Mao well known through out china and he gained support in the the countryside. Although Mao and Gandhi both wanted the same things and to get rid of the same kind of people, they used very different tactics in getting this. Mao used violence and killed many of the landlords so that the people of the countryside could become more powerful economically, but Gandhi used peaceful protests and never wanted to use violence or war against the British. (China in Revolution Video-Dr. Sue Williams, China Guidance Packet), (Gandhi-the film), (China Guidance Packet), (India Guidance Packet). These are my resources.

Second, to make each of their countries stronger politically, Ghandi and Mao generally treated the people equally, and changed key parts of the old ways which gained each of them political support. Gandhi, held peaceful protests, such as passbook burnings that he first created in South Africa. Mao on the other hand, known for not being a great speaker reached out and gained support by the things he did. He, gave his people better education, gave woman more rights, by stopping the foot binding. Took out Confucianism and said that people could marry for love not because the man wanted to marry a women or a marriage being arranged. Although they used theses tactics in similar ways they were different in the ways that they lived. For example Mao gave women rights, ironically however kept many young girls with him at home and slept with them, and a more common phrase for the things that he did where his Friday night dances. Gandhi on the other hand became celibate, which means that he would not have any sexual activity with a women, and he also was a vegetarian. Overall they had many of the same tactics, but were much different in the way that they used their own laws.

(China in Revolution), (Pilgrim of Peace Video), (Gandhi-the film), ( china guidance packet.).

Third, to make each of their countries better socially, Mao and Gandhi did the same sort of thing. Gandhi wanted to get rid of the caste system, which had many different levels, the lowest being the untouchables. And depending on which level you were born into meant that you were permanently in that caste. This also restricted you from marrying whom you loved and you were sometimes forced into arranged marriages. Gandhi also wanted to have the Muslims and Indians to embrace each other socially however was unable to do so and was sad when he heard that there would be a split between India and there would now be two countries Pakistan and India. Mao on the other hand, wanted to get rid of the Confucianism system which was much like the caste system it had different levels, which were; Rulers to Ministers, Husbands to Wives, Fathers to Sons, Older Siblings to Younger Siblings, and Friends to Friends. These where followed by the Chinese people for example husbands to wives, the husbands had complete control over their wives, they could made them do what ever they wanted whilst they would be out working or sitting at home chilling out. Mao also made china better socially on the long march, he became part of the Chinese people, he wore the same clothes and ate the same food he was their equal, and chaing kia chek on the other who was the KMT leader which was a party also looking to become the main power in china treated his military and his people harshly which made his people think that there must be something better and heard of Mao many ran away and became part of the CCP this brought more social power to Mao. Gandhi and Mao, both wanted rid of two similar things in each of their countries however, Mao wanted to kill the KMT and Gandhi on the other hand wanted the Indians and the Muslims to live in peace, this mad them very different people.

First, the results economically. Mao and Gandhi both used the same tactics to become economically powerful. Gandhi, liberated India from Britain which opened them up for a new era for trading and they now have a free international control trade market. And because he got rid of the caste system everybody can participate in the trade. Mao created the the great leap forward which was to create steal from household metals, things did not go through as planed and china went into famine. But china is now one of the worlds leading steal producers. Although the economic innovation did not happen under the rule of china the communistic rule has relaxed and china is now economically booming. (China Guidance Packet, China Under Mao Video), (Pilgrim of Peace Video, India Guidance Packet). Gandhi and Mao overall influenced their countries powerfully.

Second, the political results, Gandhi and Mao both changed their countries political power immensely. Gandhi liberated India from Britain and and made is a republic. And at India is not the largest democracy in the world therefore people have a say in their government. Mao on the other hand found the peoples vote and changed china from an imperial rule into a communistic state. In which the economical power has increased but the peoples word is not so high and there has been the devastating acts in tiannemen square in china in which students where peacefully protesting to make china a democracy and the communistic leaders ordered the military to separate the protest and many people died. The ways of rule in both countries have changed greatly from their predecessor, and the two ways of rule are very different, one communistic and one democratic and it was the viewpoints of Mao and Ghandi that made the countries what they are today.

Third, social results. Gandhi and Mao influenced their countries very similarly. Gandhi got rid of the caste system that made India more equal as a whole, and created more job opportunities. He also gave women more rights. Many other key social leaders such as nelson Mandela and the ways of peaceful protests have been used in places other than India by other people have looked at the ways of Gandhi. Mao on the other hand also got rid of the Confucianism system, making china more equal. And he also gave women rights and took away the laws of foot binding. Then gave more people an education, which put up china's literacy rate to one of the highest in the developing world. But Mao did make a few mistakes he became a leader of china later on in his life, thinking that china was becoming to western and made a student army that killed and destroyed anything western. Mao and Gandhi made a great impact on their countries socially by getting rid of things like the caste system. But Gandhi has been looked up to by other people and has passed on what he did to make the world a better place. But Mao brought death when he thought that his country was getting out of control and that is not something to look up to.

Both Mao and Gandhi made their countries what they are today socially, economically, and politically. Both by taking the same things and using them in different ways. Gandhi on one hand was more peaceful and did not believe in war. And wanted the whole of the country to unite as one. Mao on the other hand, was more military induced and used war to sometimes get what he wanted. China and India could not be what they are today with out Mao and Gandhi.
