The actions of the younger generation during the Jazz Age shocked the older generation and began a social revolution. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, This Side of Paradise, exposed the actions of the younger generation and helped to begin the Jazz Age.

Though the novel did not receive accolades as a very strong academic work, it related well to people, thus making it popular. "I have said that This Side of Paradise commits almost every sin a novel can possibly commit: but it does not commit the unpardonable sin: it does not fail to live. The whole preposterous farrago is animated with life" (Wilson 8). Although many critics viewed This Side of Paradise as a technical nightmare, it draws upon real life experience, making it a book that relates to real people.
