Summary:
People should not be so cruel to others that want to adopt children even though they are gay, single or of another race.
The world is changing and people should change with it. There will always be people that disapprove of gay parent adoption, single parent adoption, and Trans-racial adoption. In Ohio alone there are more than 3,000 children waiting to be adopted, majority of them between the ages of 10 and 17. Some people worry that homosexual, single, and Trans-racial parent adoptions can cause problems for the children. The truth is no parent is perfect, children will be loved unconditionally, no matter the gender, sexuality, or race of their parent. People of all types should have the privilege of adopting a wonderful child and be able to have the experience of parent hood.
In the late eighties, Lambeth social services banned on Trans- racial adoption. Darcus Howe stated that it is "Political correctness gone mad and a loony leftist position" (2). Darcus Howe and his wife Mrs. Howe are a Caribbean couple that had decided to adopt. In 1998, with anxiety they chose Lambeth social services for their adoption. The staff at the agency was excited; notably they thought that Darcus, as a public figure, might act as a role model to a child. For eighteen months any person who wants to adopt has to attend preparatory workshop classes that consisted of discussions, written tests, lectures about adoption. Darcus believes that in reality " a parent needs the adopted child at least as much as the child needs their parent" (2). They got a beautiful 7 year-old girl that has lived with them now for 5 year (she is now five years old). She is of mixed race but the Howe's just say that she is of African American race.
The first type of adoption is Trans-racial adoption. Howard Metsendaum, a democratic senator from Ohio, his bill, Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994, would cut off federal money form any agency that delayed or did not allow Trans- racial adoption (1). "About half of America's 30,000private adoptions each year are Trans- racial (unknown 2). Howard Metzendaum's bill will probably ease the way for few families to adopt their wonderful foster child. It will also help America take a small step away for it's increasing drift toward self- segregation. But for some children in foster care their wait for adoption will go on.
The second type of adoption is for those parents that are single. If parents are in need of help then if they try to find help then they can find it. Home share is a program that helps parents in need this program helps people that need a home for a cheap price find one. They can share housing with someone else. Dedkova, who was 40, needed housing for her and her daughter, and she only earned $1,000 a month. She was found, a woman named Paula Jones, a lawyer in Wayne, to live with. So, now that Dedkova lives with Paula she pays only $400 a month.
There are so many children in need of a home and a family. What is wrong with someone providing both a home and a family for a child without assistance from a spouse? Kera Ritter, A plain dealer reporter, states that, "attitudes have begun to change because of a raise in divorce and out-of-wedlock births." Out-of-wedlock births are were a mother has a child with out being married. Sherry Tedeshi planned to get married and have babies, but a husband never came, she decided on being a single mother. So, she adopted a 9- month- old girl from Russia. The U.S. Department of Health and Human services states that, " Single - parent adoptions have jumped from less than 5 percent of all adoptions in the 1970's to 33 percent in 2001.
Finally, there is one more type of adoption for homosexual parents. If people want to have children and are unable because there partner is their same sex, what's the harm in giving someone a home and making someone a parent at the same time. Judith Stacey and Timothy J. Biblarz, University of Southern California researchers, notes that, "There is
no notable difference between children reared by heterosexual and homosexual parents"(2). There are some people who believe that
having homosexual parents could cause problems with the child. But Judith Stacey and Timothy Biblarz research states other wise. The American Academy Of Pediatrics (AAP) stated that, ."..Children with homosexual parent fare as well in emotional, cognitive, social, and
sexual functioning as do children with heterosexual parents"(3).
Adoption has been on the rise. The progay Lambda Legal defense Fund, in a document, notes that "in the last decade there was a
sharp rise among gay and lesbian people planning and forming families through adoption, foster care, donor insemination, and other reproductive technologies" (2). The sad thing is that if they had adopted then moved to Oklahoma, the House Bill 1821 would deny legal recognition of the adoptive homosexual parent. This bill would also deny legal recognition
for those who travel through the state that are gay and lesbian. In a case were there are a homosexual biological parent and a non-biological parent, the non-biological parent would be denied access to the child in a hospital and would not be able to make medical decision for the child. Just because some people that are homosexual don't want gay and/ or lesbian people
to have children, that doesn't mean that heterosexual people shouldn't
be able to have children.
In conclusion, a child should be able to have a parent that is Trans-racial, single, and or homosexual. David Brodzinsky, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Foster Care Counseling Project at Rutgers, quotes that, "with over a half-million children in foster care and more than 100,000waiting to be placed for adoption, that need for more adoptive parents is evident" (2). There is obviously no reason gays, singles, and trans-racials can not adopt a child. If you ever have the chance or with to adopt a child do so. You never know how many lives you can change by adopting only one child. If people never adopt then there will be even more homeless people because the children will never be taught they have to have responsibility to survive. When the world changes don't you want everyone to change with it and be happy?
