Summary: This essay examines the recent increase in school violence and takes a look at some of the programs that have been developed to combat this violence. Identifies a few key societal factors -- tv among them -- that may lead to an increase in violence.
School Safety

An issue that our nation is very concerned about would have to be school safety. School safety has dramatically risen in the past couple years. In 1974, Congress mandated that the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare conduct a national survey to examine the prevalence of school crime and identify the perpetrators. The study, Violent School-Safe Schools: The Safe School Study Report to the Congress, found that 40% of the robberies and 36% of the assaults on teenagers took place in schools (Riley, 1996). A lot of violent activity occurs within school hours. It is also a question to ask what is being done. Riley reports that Conflict resolution classes are now part of the curriculum today in schools. Students in Junior high have the highest rate of victimization.
