In the text, Romulus My Father, we are given an insight into Romulus's intriguing life through the memories of his loving son, Raimond. Raimond Gaita tells us of hardships faced by Romulus, from his early troubling childhood in Yugoslavia, to times of great sadness and mental anguish he conquered in his later years in Australia. Throughout these accounts, many of them dark and dismal, Romulus's true colours are always evidently bold. His qualities of honesty, high morals, and bravery are seen in these times where with other people we would have seen them crumble.

The first instance of Romulus's courage in the novel is in his early childhood in chapter one. We are told of how Romulus protected his grandfather from being beaten by his drunken uncle, a man who would surely have been a fright to any other young child.
