Which Person in My View Is the Most Responsible for the Death of Eva Smith or Daisy Renton?
Summary: The historical and social contexts in "An Inspector Calls" both have the same significance in the play. During the early twentieth century, there was much more of social segregation between the upper and the lower classes than there is today. Arthur Birling is a very good example of this.
Before I look at the task of deciding which person is the most responsible for the death of Eva Smith, it is compulsory to first look at the type of crime and the time at which it has been committed.
The play's historical and social contexts both have the same significance in the play. During the early twentieth century, there was much more of social segregation between the upper and the lower classes than there is today. Arthur Birling is a very good example of this. He may well have had humble origins from his business, but his wealth and power has allowed him to rise up the social hierarchy and made him forget what it is like to be poor and live in misery.
