Summary:
For my dance report, I saw a dance piece that was choreographed to music by Frank Sinatra. It was a movie that was separated into four parts, with ballet, contemporary dancing, stage dancing and ballroom dancing. Each had a different meaning.
For my dance report, I saw a dance piece that was choreographed to music by Frank Sinatra. It was a movie that was separated into four parts, each having a different meaning.
The piece had various styles of dance throughout. There was some ballet involved, when the girl dancer did all of the different flips and jumps in the air with her partner and the dance was more of a graceful flow. This time of the dance was more soft and looked as if they were expressing a time of happiness in the dancer's lives. There was also jazz, when they both did intricate footwork and the dance was choreographed more abruptly with sharper moves and less flow. This time in the pieces seemed to be at a less calm and happy point between the two dancers.
All of the pieces throughout the movie were very good but I personally enjoyed when the man and woman were dancing as though they were in love. When they danced with these expressions they had wonderful chemistry. They were always looking into each other's eyes and were always holding onto each other somehow, no matter what the move they were performing. Their chemistry was very believable and helped me, the viewer, really get into the performance, as if it was not a story being performed but that I were actually eavesdropping on their personal lives.
In many pieces of the dance, the lyrics of the music were actually telling the story of the dancers. In one of the pieces, Sinatra is singing about doing things his way. The dancers express the feelings and emotions of this song by being very abrupt with each other. The man dancer is not gentle with the woman dancer and jerks her around in many directions. As you can tell by both the lyrics and the movements, the dancers are in an argument and are not happy with one another. The addition of the song and its lyrics to the movements of the dance add to the drama of the dancers and the meaning of the sharpness of the dance. It helped you visualize more deeply into what was going on.
There was also a costume change during this piece. When the man and the woman are first dancing and are happy they are dressed in evening wear. The man has on a tuxedo and the woman has on a black dress. Their wear is formal and looks very polished. When the costume change takes place, the man's tuxedo jacket is off and he is overly obvious with the fact that he is chewing gum. When he is wearing this outfit, he is sharper with the woman and his moves and it almost seems as if he is drunk. He is more sudden with the way he handles her also. The man dancer does not seem as kind as before and has an informal feel to him. The costume change helps you pick up on the fact that it is a different personality coming from the man towards the woman.
The dance pieces did relate a story. You could tell this by the fact that it was only the two dancers throughout the whole movie and that they were directly concerned with only each other. You could also tell by the way that, although they danced together throughout, their technique changed from gentle to subtle.
I thought this movie was a good film and I enjoyed seeing it.
